LOOK: Spotlight on Dark Lips

... how to make them work

Hosted by Vogue magazine's Anna Wintour, the Met Ball is considered the biggest night in the fashion industry's calendar. This annual ball celebrates the annual opening of the Metropolitan Museum's fashion exhibit which this year was celebration two Iconic italian women, Miuccia Prada and the late Elsa Schiaparelli. The world hottest celebs, musicians, artists and fashion icons arrived dressed to impress.

Where are we going with this? Well dark lips were a huge trend that evening, being sported by Lana Del Rey, Kate Bosworth and Camilla Belle to name a few... We don't know why she opted to minimise the size of her lips, but hey.. We love this dark lips trend!

How to wear it..

Let the lips speak for themselves! We love pairing down a dark lip with a more simple makeup, this also makes it so much more wearable.

Think defined, groomed brows, flawless skin with a matte, cashmere finish and a little contouring under the cheekbone. If you can't bear to only wear mascara then use a neutral brown eyeshadow (about 3 shades darker than your current skin tone) and leave it there!

Dark lips and strong or dark eyes can work too, so play around with your look. Don't forget it's only makeup - it washes off! Dark lips aren't just a Autumn/Winter trend and can be worn anytime.

Want to make someone listen to you? Wear a dark lip and they'll hear every word! Dark colours draw attention to your mouth.

Which Colour to use..

Deep brown-red's look great on any skin colour, and are a great choice for first time wearers.

EXPERIMENT! We love these great dark colours...

Application tips..

Dark lips can be hard to do and difficult to maintain.. Here are my favourite tips when applying dark lips! Don't forget to use lip balm first, and make sure you remove the excess lip balm before applying any colour to your lips.

Here's how I do it..

1. Use the lipstick from the bullet or use a brush, and fill in the lip just missing the lip line

2. Using a matching lip liner or your lipstick and a lip brush, carefully trace your lip line for a precise finish

3. Apply another coat of lipstick

4. Grab a fine brush and put a little concealor on it. This will act as an eraser and remove any bumpy lines or smudges from around the outside contour of your lips.

Make it last  Apply a light layer of transparent powder on top using a fluffy brush.

Et Voila.

Diary Of A fashion Show

I was fortunate enough to be called to do my fourth fashion show with the amazing Nora Nona. Nora was heading up the team at a special show with Bernard Chandran at the Islamic Fashion Festival.

Here's what happened!

CALL TIME: 5PM

LOCATION: THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEAM

4.30pm - After sweating it out on the London Underground, then getting soaked walking up from South Kensington station, I finally arrived! The show was taking place at the staircase where that huge T-Rex skeleton is, so we were getting the models ready in a boardroom tucked away. Cue problem number 1: No windows that open and it's boiling!

Nora our Key Artist (the one who designs the look that the team are creating) talked to us all about the 7 variations of her look that were going to be used during the fashion shows for each designer...

I was so excited to see the moodboard Nora had created sporting pictures of Sophia Loren in Cleopatra and that fierce eyeliner. YES! Look 1 was a smokey eye, and Look 2 was the Cleopatra inspired liner.

5.45pm - Nora did a quick demo then its over to us. First look for me was the smokey cat-eye.

These are the products that I used..

+ MAC STUDIO SCULPT FOUNDATION AND MICROFINE AIRBRUSH FORMULA

+ ESTEE LAUDER MAXIMUM COVER CONCEALOR

+ LAURA MERCIER SECRET FINISH POWDER

+ MAC EYESHADOWS IN NAVAL BLUE (NAVY) AND COBALT (MEDIUM SKY BLUE)

+ BOBBI BROWN GEL LINER IN BLACK

+ MAC FELINE KOHL POWER PENCIL

+ MAC NO.6 LASHES

+ MAC SCULPTING POWDER IN SCULPT

+ MAC LIPSTICK IN BLANKETY

<<< This is me working on my model..

6.15pm - models are whisked away moments from being finished for their rehearsal so we start on the next round of makeup. Look 2 for me was the Cleopatra inspired eye liner, and I managed to grab another beaut model!

Whilst I'm working on my second model the food comes out.

I'm usually excited to see food, this was a bit of an anti-climax. Food of model proportions! Carrot sticks, cucumber, strawberries and other exotic fruits, guacamole and another weird dip that looked like chopped grass.. I skipped that one. Filled a hole temporarily!

Hands washed then back to my second makeup. This look is more tricky as there is a straight line underneath the eye. Liner under pressure is always more challenging too!

6.50 - finally the first round of models are back from rehersal.. and they have to be finished in 10 minutes?! So I finish my look with the lipstick and lashes and add a little last eyeshadow before I send her backstage to get dressed.

7.00 - Back to look 2. Get that finished off. Here's how it looked..

8.30 - First show starts! My first model goes down the staircase. Once she's done she heads back to me to have a darker lip put on. A fuschia pink.

9.50 - My second model goes off to get dressed after a last few finishing touches are added. And I head backstage to assist with touchups.

PANIC!! A model is due to go on and someone is only just applying foundation to her, she must have arrived late! 5 Artist including me rush to her and get this difficult look done in just 10 minutes... I do her lip backstage along with other touchups before they all head for the staircase runway!

10.15 - Its all over! And my kit is a little messy... :(

Here are a few final pictures taken by our backstage photographer Paula Harrowing, check her out!
